Fo Real? Chicken Farmers On 'AGT'

Tonight on America's Got Talent, an unemployed farmer impressed the judges with his rendition of "If Tomorrow Never Comes." Sometimes I think there are acts placed on this show just to spice things up!

Jam-Packed 'SVU' News

If you haven't heard by now, you're behind. NBC is bringing back Law & Order: SVU; one of at least five shows that was on the possible chopping block to make way for Jay Leno's new primetime chat-fest. This week we learned the show would return with its two lead actors: Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni. It was not clear leading up to this announcement if the two would return. Contract talks reportedly got quite heated.

And, surprise, Christine Lahti joins the cast! The first four episodes will feature Lahti as an assistant district attorney. Following that stint, Stephanie March will be back for ten episodes. It's not clear who will play the role of ADA in the last nine episodes of the upcoming season.

What's more? Yes, there's more! Wentworth Miller will guest star on the season premier, which airs September 23rd. That's a Wednesday, folks - a new night for SVU! Miller will play a NYPD officer who comes to the rescue of a rape victim.

'It Still Freakin' Works!'

We're not sure if this is an elaborate hoax or if this idiot really did drop his iPhone 3GS in the pool, but it's impressive (if it's real).

New Music Flashback: O.A.R.

We could feature "Shattered" or "This Town" here, but we've decided to make it a flashback with "Hey Girl." The video is of an O.A.R. show in New Jersey in 2005. This summer, though, they're back on the road and beefing up their summer tour. The "This Town Tour" has been extended to include a second leg (after taking July off). Tour dates here.

New Music Now: Brad Paisley, "Then"

Country superstar Brad Paisley is attempting the crossover to AC stations with his new single - "Then."

Comcast Dives Into Mobile Networks

After years of continuing price hikes, Comcast has the money during this recession to build a new mobile network in an effort to get even more money out of us. The company launched High-Speed 2go in Portland, Oregon, this week, but plans further expansion to Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia yet this year; with a total of 80 U.S. markets by the end of 2010.

Comcast - or as I like to call it "Concast" - is now planning to directly compete with Verizon and AT&T. In most markets, Verizon moved in on Comcast's territory with FiOS. Now, Comcast gets payback with this so-called 4G network.

If you've wanted to give your entire paycheck to a single company, Comcast is making it possible with home-based voice, cable internet, television and now wireless services. No word on whether the company will sell mobile devices (I mean phones/smartphones) compatable with their new 4G network.

New Rule: No Busy Signal At Emergency Services

Here's the deal. If you call 9-1-1 you should never hear a busy signal. Ever. EVER. There's a story from northern California citing a couple witnessing a tragic car accident that left one person dead and others injured. It took 18 minutes to get through to an emergency dispatcher. EIGHTEEN MINUTES!

If you're in a rural area or a small town, where only one or two dispatchers are on duty, there should be laws requiring 9-1-1 calls to rollover to a neighboring town or a county/state call center. Better yet, someone needs to come up with a regional dispatch center that cities/towns/counties/municipalities can use as overflow call centers acting as emergency dispatch.

How many times do callers die after not being able to reach a 9-1-1 dispatcher? What if it was someone on the verge of suicide and they decide to make one last-ditch attempt to reach out for help and all they get is a busy signal? It's completely unacceptable to hear a busy signal upon calling 9-1-1.

Kate Jackson Remembers Fawcett

Former Charlie's Angels co-star Kate Jackson has given her first interview since Farrah Fawcett passed away. She spoke with EW.com this weekend and spoke of how hard it is to talk about Farrah's death. In the interview she also reveals her first impressions of Farrah.
I just remembered a minute ago that right after I came to Hollywood from New York, I went to my first party where there were Hollywood people, and I walked in the door, and I knew that Lee Majors was married. I saw Lee Majors. He was the first star I had ever seen. Then I realized someone was with him, and I was almost blinded by the most gorgeous, magnificent, glorious girl about my age, who was talking and laughing with him. I just froze and stared, and I thought to myself, ‘Oh God, the competition is really bad around here.’ And it (turns out the girl talking with Majors) was Farrah.

'Nip/Tuck' CANCELLED

Nip/Tuck may have gotten its walking papers last week, but that doesn't mean we'll have a shortage of entertainment from the good doctors. FX is using the term "canceled" very loosely here. They've ceased productions on new shows (after exactly 100 episodes), but there are enough shows in the can to keep us in new episodes through 2011. That's two more seasons of Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahan!

That also means no more Bradley Cooper in his underwear!

On Newsstands Tomorrow: MJ

Michael Jackson will grace the cover of Time's June 29th issue. They've released the cover art (below).

This won't be the only cover MJ will be on this week. TV Guide has released their cover and many more are in store.

MJ Live Album Possibly In The Works

The night before Michael Jackson passed away, he was in rehearsals for his London 50-night concert event. His promoter - AEG - had recorded the full dress rehearsal in high definition and full audio. Now, we are hearing that same promoter may already be prepping a live package (DVD/CD) for wide release.

With this potential new release and his catalog breaking sales records posthumously, it looks like his estate may just be able to pay off that $400-Million in debt.

Billy Mays On 'Tonight Show'

Just last week, Billy Mays appeared on The Tonight Show.

RIP: Billy Mays

Reports from Florida are that infomercial genius Billy Mays has passed away. @BreakingNews is reporting Mays was on a U.S. Airways plane that made a hard landing in Tampa yesterday. St. Petersburg Times reports the 50-year-old TV pitchman was found by his wife. In a statement, Deborah Mays said they don't plan to make any public announcements regarding Mays' death.

MSNBC Launches HD, New Graphics Package

MSNBC will have an entirely new look when you turn it on tomorrow morning. Not only a new look, but the channel will also be available on your HD tier. An announcement e-mail to affiliates simply stated:
MSNBC also did a test run with the new graphics Saturday morning. That video is below.

Only Limbaugh Could Come To This Conclusion

Sometimes it's hard to fathom just how Rush Limbaugh could come to the conclusions he does. Hearing his Mark Sanford (R-SC) rant and tying it to Barack Obama is just one of those times. After the South Carolina governor admitted he traveled to Argentina to have a fling with another woman, Limbaugh popped a few thinking pills and decided he could somehow blame Obama for the trist.

Any sane person would not come to this conclusion. Sanford is an adult and is responsible for his own actions. There is no other person on earth to blame for his adulterous activities. However, that said, here's how Limbaugh made the connection (I can't stand to hear this blowhard's voice so here's the transcript).
One of the first thoughts that crossed my mind, with Mark Sanford ... this is the first thought: What he did defies logic. This is ... more than being 180 degrees out of phase because of lust, or love. To split the scene for five days, and we know he's been separated, and he knows, by the way, that the newspaper in his state has the emails between him and his concubine down there in Argentina, he knows this. He knows that somebody knows what's going on. He knows his wife knows. So he ups and leaves for five days, doesn't leave anybody in charge of the state, in case there's an emergency. This is almost like: I don't give a damn! Country's going to hell in a handbasket. I just want out of here! He had just tried to fight the stimulus money coming to South Carolina. He didn't want any part of it. He lost the battle and said "What the hell? The Federal government is taking over! I want to enjoy life!
You know I can almost see how the tighty righties in this nation almost buy this BS. Almost.

MJ's Death Bigger Than 9/11 On One Service

When Michael Jackson passed away Thursday afternoon, AT&T said they saw a spike in usage bigger than that seen immediately following the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The mobile network released statistics showing nearly 4-million text messages per minute at the peak.

In addition to the mobile spike, Google News experienced a brief outage during the confusion to find out if he really had passed away.

Jackson's Surprise Demise Getting Too Much Coverage?

When Farrah Fawcett passed away early Thursday, we pretty much knew it was coming any day. She had been re-admitted to ICU over the weekend after a lengthy battle with cancer. So when the news came that she had passed - as sad as it was - we weren't surprised or shocked. On the other hand, when the first reports of Michael Jackson's cardiac arrest came in, editors and news outlets began scrambling.

All news organizations have pre-written bios and segments ready to air/publish upon someone's death (save for adding minor details such as current age, time references, etc). Jackson's death left the industry in a scramble. And when TMZ began to break the news before any other major outlet, there were more problems (such as independently confirming the reports).

This morning, just more than half-a-day after his death, viewers were already saying they'd had too much. On NBC alone, we saw a lengthy Nightly News report, a special one-hour Dateline, our local 11 p.m. news and the entire first hour of Today dedicated to Jackson's death. All this while Fawcett's death spawned a one-hour Dateline special only (and a re-air of Farrah's Story Friday night).

The Los Angeles Times has a great behind-the-scenes story of how Jackson's death has been covered and how it will be covered. Read the article here.

Musical Tributes To Michael Jackson

Whenever a high-profile musician passes away, radio stations are always quick to jump on the wagon and increase that artist's airplay. It's insulting really. A somewhat has-been artist dies and suddenly rockets to the top of the charts with great songs that just don't get played anymore.

Such is the case with Michael Jackson. This time last week, we would have been hard-pressed to find his name on the "Top" anything on iTunes. This week? Top everything (almost)! Top Album. Top Music Video. Almost the Top Song (damn Black Eyed Peas). Not just the top, but multiple entries on each list.On WeAreHunted, the Twitter chart has Jackson as the most talked-about artist of the day. And "Beat It" is the most talked-about song of the day on Twitter.
We'd put big money on it that when Last.FM releases this week's numbers, Jackson will be at the top. So - radio programmers - remember this when you're deciding which songs to put in your station's library. Why wait until a great artist passes away to play their music?

Rosie Radio will air 10 a.m. to Noon Eastern on Sirius XM Stars beginning this Fall.

Walter Cronkite Possibly Near Death

On a day we lost two entertainment icons much too early in their lives, comes news a legendary news man is in the final days of his life. In a statement released today, the family of Walter Cronkite said he is not expected to recuperate. Cronkite is currently being treated for cerebrovascular disease.
Sadly, he is very ill and is not expected to recuperate; he is resting at home surrounded by family, friends and a wonderful medical team. We thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes.
The iconic former CBS newsman is 92 years old.

RIP: Michael Jackson

The "King Of Pop" passed away suddenly today. Michael Jackson died shortly after being taken by ambulance to UCLA Medical Center under cardiac arrest. After the initial shock, there was further shock when we found out this is what it would take to get MTV to actually play music videos.

Dateline NBC and ABC News are airing specials tonight honoring Jackson (both are airing right now on the east coast).

RIP: Farrah Fawcett

Charlie's Angels star and pin-up icon Farrah Fawcett passed away today. She has battled a very public fight with cancer over the last few years. Here is the AP bio.

Both ABC News and NBC News are producing special programs tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern. NBC will also re-air Farrah's Story on Friday (6/26) at 9 p.m. Eastern (with a streaming broadcast on NBC.com after it airs Friday night).

Another Soap Box Rant... This Time The Record Industry

I've had just about enough of the recording industry bullying us little people. It's their own damn fault people don't want to buy physical CDs anymore. It's their fault people had to find a way to "share" music amongst friends and acquaintances. Remember the lawsuits back in the 90's over price-fixing? So now they need to get their money back by going after mothers and nerds.

Here's an example of outrageous. Last week, a Minnesota jury awarded the recording industry, including Sony BMG, $1.92-Million in damages. The lawsuit was against one person. A 32-year-old mother of four, who will never have the wherewithal to pay such damages.

You're probably thinking this person filled her entire music library on Kazaa, but you'd be wrong. Of those who used her computer - her ex-boyfriend, two sons and herself - they downloaded 24 songs. That's right. Twenty-four songs. That means she ended up paying $80,000 per song! Those are some expensive songs!

Why aren't these recording industry companies going after the file sharing networks that make file sharing possible? I agree completely that piracy is wrong in all its forms, but I don't think the recording industry should be going after these end users. Go after those who make the sharing possible or offer up the copyright-protected material. Granted she did install Kazaa and she - or those using her system - actively sought songs on the service and downloaded them knowing the risks, but this is truly sending the wrong message. And just continues to portray the recording industry as a big, bad, verocious wolf.

It's time for the recording industry to change with the times. This isn't 1995 anymore and, in these digital times, we don't want to spend $20 for a physical CD. It's says a lot that record companies are working with on-line music stores to get rid of DRM, but it's not enough. Keep music affordable or allow your artists to go out on their own and make music in their own way.

And don't get me started on why else I think the RIAA needs to cease operations immediately.

Johnny Depp, A Good Guy

A Chicago waiter found out just how good a guy Johnny Depp really is. Mohammed A . Sekhani is a server at Gibsons - a legendary steakhouse. He waited on Depp several times during filming for Public Enemies, but the most recent visit was the most memorable. Why? A $4,000 tip.

Depp ordered Clams Casino and a couple bottles of $500 Italian wine for the party.

When Do We Get To Vote "News" Out Of Their Name?

Fox News, in their continuing disrespect for fact, again "mistakenly" gave the Democrats a wayward member of the GOP. FNC has a continuing problem with either not doing their research or purposely (maliciously?) placing that little "D" after a member of the GOP screwed up. The latest happened today after scoundrel South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford admitted he had an affair, which allegedly concluded on his trip to Argentina.

For a national "news" network, a single error of this caliber is not acceptable. Ever. To have it happen more than once? The network is now worthy of questioning. A true news network would not make such a juvenile mistake. If they did, the person responsible would be fired on the spot. If they were under my watch, that person would be fired and their immediate supervisor would have some explaining to do.

They've previously branded Mark Foley a "D" immediately following news of his page scandal. And others being mislabeled, Congressman Pat Toomey, Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and more.

It's not that Fox made a simple error either. It's always in the heat of "breaking news." If the person responsible can't move on the fly and get their facts right, take them off the front line. Period.

TV News We Missed: Freddie Prinze, Jr Joins '24'

We aren't too proud to say we missed this story, which was released in May and reported by Zap 2 It on May 28th. There, we said it. It just slipped through the cracks. Freddie Prinze, Jr, has signed on to play a returning Marine who runs field ops for CTU in the eighth season of 24.

Our prediction is this will be how 24 will kill off the seemingly indestructible Jack Bauer. If Prinze is successful in the role, that is.

As previously reported, the next season of 24 - which is already in production - will be set in Manhattan. Season 8 begins in January on FOX.

Pick One

The simplest, most entertaining web-site I've seen all day! Pick One is simple. You're given two options. You just, ahem, pick one. Each time a word is picked, it gets a point. The words or phrases with the most points are placed on the top ten. The least points go on the bottom ten. Easy enough?

Here's one of my recent decisions:

Go try it! Right now.

Google Maps Again Improves Features

Google released a new feature this week that will help you navigate their mapping service. In the screenshot below, I zoomed into N Halsted Street at W Belmont Avenue in Chicago. To find out what businesses are in a building, you just right-click on it and choose "What's Here?" In this example, the chosen building houses Playground Improv Theater.
I tested a couple locations - in addition to Chicago. In West Palm Beach, Florida, the results were mixed. Many locations in CityPlace -downtown - didn't find results, but moving out from downtown found better results. And I tried several locations in my home town of Fort Wayne, Indiana, but most locations didn't return results (with the exception of a couple restaurants).

Conclusion: Use at your own risk.

Broadway Bares: Not Just The Highlights!

Broadway Bares took place Sunday night in New York. The event was created in the 90's by Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS and has quickly become the organization's signature event. Here are this blog's featured highlights.

Tonight's Shirtlessness

Wednesday's Another Big Day For Marriage Equality

New York's State Senate is scheduled to vote on that state's same-sex marriage bill tomorrow.

If you're in New York, call your state senator and urge them to vote in favor of marriage equality.

The measure has previously passed the state house. Governor David Paterson has said he will sign the bill should it cross his desk.

Sirius XM Subscribers Dinged Again

Subscribers of the nation's only satellite radio service should get ready to pay more. In exchange for those commercial-free music channels, we've got to be ready to pay a pretty penny. What's always been $12.95 per month will continue to be $12.95 per month, but with extra fees.

As part of the merger deal Sirius XM cannot increase rates for three years, but they can add on a U.S. Music Royalty Fee. This fee will add $1.98 per month to your subscription for any renewals after July 29, 2009.

So as a way to get more money out of us without losing their merger, they've added fees - such as the one above - and taken services away. The merged company doesn't offer the programs that made us root for the merger (i.e. Oprah's not available to Sirius subscribers, Stern isn't available to XM subscribers). We all thought the merger was good because we'd get the best of both worlds. WRONG.

And free Sirius Internet Radio. Gone. That'll be an extra fee. So I used to get everything Sirius offered plus Internet Radio for my ~$150 per year, but now it's like having basic cable.

Country Boys On The Road

Rascal Flatts is on the road this summer touring in support of Unstoppable. This weekend they hit New Jersey, Connecticut and Virginia. They've also released "Summer Nights" as the next single from said album. Full tour schedule available on their web-site.

Country star Kenny Chesney continues his summer tour, even tweaking it to add more dates. Those new dates include stops in Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina and New York City. This week, he's in Virginia Beach and Philadelphia.

'Grey's' News: Heigl Back, Knight Isn't

As mentioned on our Twitter feed, we found out last week T.R. Knight would not be returning to Grey's Anatomy next season. We now know, though, Katherine Heigl will return. Both lives were left hanging at the end of the last season.

Knight's "George O'Malley" joined the Army just before getting hit by a bus doing a good deed. The end of the cliffhanger showed Meredith figuring out the horribly disfigured John Doe was the beloved George.

Heigl's character was being treated for brain cancer through much of the second half of last season. The most dangerous procedure was performed just before the end of the season. It wasn't clear either would survive and the behind the scenes drama just added to the furor to find out which one died.

Johnny Depp Goes To Wonderland

Next year, you'll be seeing a live action version of Alice In Wonderland. Tim Burton's version of the fairy tale features Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway. Pictures of all three follow.
